Point & Shoot Camera

by Irma Kathleen Chua Sy

1. What is it? What is it for?

A digital point-and-shoot camera is a device that captures real-life images intended to be preserved as still photographs. It functions exactly as its name indicates. A user simply aims the device at whatever he wants to capture and then click to shoot. Digital cameras generally have lens that automatically pop out when turned on, an LCD screen where the user can instantly see the image to be captured, a flash that provides additional light when needed and a shutter that triggers the camera to capture and process the image when pressed. The setting of such cameras can be adjusted; however, point-and-shoot cameras are usually used with automatic settings, which means the camera adjusts the shutter speed, aperture, flash and other settings automatically so all the photographer has to do is literally point and shoot.

2. What does it look like?

3. What is the technology behind it?

It has a little built-in computer inside that processes and records the images electronically, requiring no films, chemical and mechanical processes needed when using conventional film cameras. Digital cameras work similarly to conventional cameras. Both uses a series of lenses that focus light to provide a captured image, but, instead of directing the light to a film, the digital camera focuses the light onto a sensor – either charge coupled device (CCD) or complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) – that converts light into electronic charges. The built-in computer then processes the information into digital data. The processor then “interpolates the data from the different pixels to create natural color” making it possible to see the image in the LCD. Finally, the data is stored in a memory device.
